Take More Shots

The great athletes fail as often, more more, than they succeed. The lesson for entrepreneurs: take more shots.

Kobe Bryant missed 14,481 shots in his NBA career.

That's the most shots ever missed by an NBA player.

And yet, he was one of the best players to ever play the game.

You can find similar stats about almost any great athlete. They have as many misses, fails, and almosts as they do wins (if not more).

But we don't remember how much they failed.

We remember them for their success.

But what we often forget is that they succeeded because of all those failures.

They took more shots, had more at-bats, got in the ring more. And all those attempts gave them more chances to get better, and eventually be great.

As entrepreneurs, our shots are our offers.

But too often we're afraid to take those shots.

We worry what people will think about us. We’re afraid our shots will fall short. That they get us the win.

And so we wait.

We hold on to the ball, and every once in a while we’ll take a shot.

Sometimes we hit a basket, but usually we miss.

And then we wonder why we’re not winning.

Well, it’s because we’re not taking enough shots.

We need to make offers every day. More than we’re comfortable with.

It’s the only way to get the shots on goal we need to be able to make enough to win the game.

It’s hard though. I don't even do this for all the reasons I mentioned.

But it's the thing we have to do.

Get out there and make offers every day.

Adjust as we see what works and what doesn’t.

And then take some more shots.
